Nonlinear bending waves in Keplerian accretion discs

چکیده
The nonlinear dynamics of a warped accretion disc is investigated in the important case of a thin Keplerian disc with negligible viscosity and self-gravity. A one-dimensional evolutionary equation is formally derived that describes the primary nonlinear and dispersive effects on propagating bending waves other than parametric instabilities. It has the form of a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation with coefficients that are obtained explicitly for a particular model of a disc. The properties of this equation are analysed in some detail and illustrative numerical solutions are presented. The nonlinear and dispersive effects both depend on the compressibility of the gas through its adiabatic index Γ. In the physically realistic case Γ < 3, nonlinearity does not lead to the steepening of bending waves but instead enhances their linear dispersion. In the opposite case Γ > 3, nonlinearity leads to wave steepening and solitary waves are supported. The effects of a small effective viscosity, which may suppress parametric instabilities, are also considered. This analysis may provide a useful point of comparison between theory and numerical simulations of warped accretion discs.

Hydrodynamic Simulations of Propagating Warps and Bending Waves in Accretion Discs
We present the results of a study of propagating warp or bending waves in accretion discs. Three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were performed using SPH, and the results are compared with calculations based on the linear theory of warped discs. We examine the response of a gaseous disc to an initially imposed warping disturbance under a variety of physical conditions. We consider primaril...

A new description of the dynamics of warped accretion discs is presented. A theory of fully nonlinear, slowly varying bending waves is developed, involving a proper treatment of viscous fluid dynamics but neglecting self-gravitation. The special case of resonant wave propagation found in inviscid Keplerian discs is not considered. The resulting description goes beyond existing linear and nonlin...

Hydromagnetic stresses in accretion discs have been the subject of intense theoretical research over the past one and a half decades. Most of the disc simulations have assumed a small initial magnetic field and studied the turbulence that arises from the magnetorotational instability. However, gaseous discs in galactic nuclei and in some binary systems are likely to have significant initial mag...

I review the observational evidence for spiral structure in the accretion discs of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Doppler tomography is ideally suited to resolve and map such co-rotating patterns and allows a straightforward comparison with theory. The dwarf nova IP Pegasi presents the best studied case, carrying two spiral arms in a wide range of emission lines throughout its outbursts. Both arm...
متن کاملAn alpha theory of time-dependent warped accretion discs
The non-linear fluid dynamics of a warped accretion disc was investigated in an earlier paper by developing a theory of fully non-linear bending waves in a thin, viscous disc. That analysis is here extended to take proper account of thermal and radiative effects by solving an energy equation that includes viscous dissipation and radiative transport. The problem is reduced to simple one-dimensio...
